Thailand is amplifying its cultural diplomacy as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul engaged in significant talks with Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz at UNESCO's Paris headquarters. The discussions concentrated on enhancing collaboration in cultural heritage, educational initiatives, sustainable tourism, and the international promotion of Thailand’s soft power.
In these discussions, Thailand showcased its mission to have “Thai Traditional Dress” included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Thai representatives emphasized that this endeavor is a pivotal step towards safeguarding the nation's cultural identity while displaying the artistry, textile skills, and historic significance of Thai apparel to the global audience.
Ratchada Thanadirek, the government spokesperson, articulated that this nomination is a tribute to the enduring influence of Queen Sirikit, who has been instrumental in the global promotion of Thai silk, fabrics, and traditional designs. Officials are optimistic that UNESCO’s acknowledgment would elevate knowledge of Thailand’s rich intangible cultural heritage.
Additionally, the discussions placed a considerable emphasis on sustainable tourism partnerships. UNESCO representatives commended Thailand’s dedication to harmonizing tourism development with the safeguarding of cultural landmarks and natural resources. At present, Thailand boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and remains committed to preserving these assets while fostering economic growth.
Prime Minister Anutin expressed aspirations for Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan to be considered for inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the upcoming 48th World Heritage Committee session slated for later this year in South Korea.
The dialogue also ventured into future educational collaborations, notably discussing a potential major Global Education Meeting in 2027. Officials remarked that these conversations signify a strengthening relationship between Thailand and UNESCO in the realms of education, science, cultural interaction, and sustainable development.
UNESCO’s Director-General has lauded Thailand’s proactive stance in international cooperation and welcomed the growing engagement of Thailand’s private sector in projects pertaining to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation. Observers consider this meeting emblematic of Thailand's expanded strategy of leveraging culture, heritage, and tourism as significant drivers of global soft power.
