Lionel Messi Faces Injury Setback in Inter Miami’s Thrilling Win

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a dramatic encounter, Inter Miami's captain Lionel Messi may have incurred a left thigh injury during his team's 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Union on Sunday evening.

The injury incident occurred in the 70th minute, as Messi seemed to experience discomfort following a free kick. Observers noted him gripping the upper area of his left thigh before signaling for a substitution.

Substituted in the 73rd minute for Mateo Silvetti, Messi was seen exiting the field independently before making his way to the locker room. There has yet to be an official statement regarding the severity of his condition.

The 38-year-old forward has been in remarkable form this season, leading the MLS with 20 goal contributions, comprising 12 goals and eight assists over just 14 matches.

Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has achieved a total of 107 goal contributions—62 goals and 45 assists across 67 matches.

This injury arises at a pivotal moment as the MLS enters a six-week hiatus for the upcoming FIFA World Cup set to begin on June 11 and conclude on July 19.

Messi is anticipated to join the Argentina national team during the tournament, although the definitive squad has yet to be disclosed.

Argentina will kick off their Group J campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City, preceded by friendly matches against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
