Thailand and Japan Enhance Collaboration in Technology

Post by : Shakul

Thailand and Japan have solidified their discussions regarding future collaborations in technology, science, innovation, and education, aiming to enhance ties in advanced industries and human resource development.

During a meeting in Bangkok, Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand, welcomed Japanese Ambassador Otaka Masato to explore pivotal areas like semiconductors, space technology, synchrotron research, and the growth of the KOSEN education initiative in Thailand.

Thai officials highlighted the government's commitment to advancing technology as a means to foster new economic drivers and boost the country's long-lasting industrial competitiveness. Japan was identified as a crucial ally due to its cutting-edge expertise in science and technology.

Key discussions centered on the KOSEN curriculum, a Japanese model of technical education that is currently being implemented at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, with plans for expansion to additional institutions in Thailand.

Discussions also encompassed collaboration on satellite technology, disaster response systems, climate change research, semiconductor advancements, and the establishment of Thailand’s fourth-generation synchrotron light source, with participation from agencies such as NSTDA, GISTDA, NARIT, and STRI.

Ambassador Otaka Masato emphasized the historical collaboration between Thailand and Japan in science and technology, noting that both nations have ample opportunities to deepen their grassroots connections in space research and satellite technology, focusing on agricultural management, disaster prevention, and economic growth.

Updates were shared regarding a draft memorandum of cooperation concerning space technology, involving Thailand’s MHESI and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, with Thai officials confirming that the proposal is progressing through necessary approval steps before reaching the Cabinet.
