Thailand Calls for Public Participation in Bodhi Tree Commemoration

Post by : Shakul

The Ministry of Interior in Thailand has extended an invitation to Buddhists nationwide to engage in a nationwide ceremony dedicated to the royal Bodhi Tree on Visakha Bucha Day 2026. Scheduled for May 31, the ceremony aims to foster public unity and spiritual contemplation while honoring cherished Buddhist traditions.

Arsit Sampanrat, the Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, noted that this initiative follows a royal gift from His Majesty the King, who graciously presented the “Phra Sri Maha Bodhi Damasarajabopit” tree to the Ministry. The sacred tree was subsequently distributed to provincial governors to be planted in honor of the King’s birthday in 2025.

The Bodhi Tree is revered in Buddhism as a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual insight. Officials assert that this royal Bodhi Tree project represents a beacon of national prosperity and harmony, aiming to enhance bonds between local communities and their Buddhist heritage.

On Visakha Bucha Day, a significant date in the Buddhist calendar, His Majesty has also offered artificial lotus flower arrangements for use in ceremonies across the country. These lotus offerings will be given as acts of devotion and merit-making at designated Bodhi Tree sites in each province.

Coordinated by provincial administrations alongside local government bodies and religious groups, ceremonies are set to unfold simultaneously across all 76 provinces. The events will commence at 8:39 PM on May 31, with governors leading the official proceedings in their areas.

Officials indicated that the lotus offering ceremony symbolizes gratitude and respect towards Buddhist teachings. It is anticipated to unite diverse communities in a shared devotional moment and uphold Thailand’s rich religious customs.

The Ministry of Interior is encouraging families across the nation to participate in these ceremonies and partake in merit-making activities. Authorities aim to foster social harmony, promote the principles of Buddhism, and extend blessings and prosperity to individuals, families, and the nation as a collective.
