Strengthening Ties: Thailand and Australia Discuss Strategic Cooperation

Post by : Shakul

Thailand and Australia have underscored their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations through collaborations in key areas, including security, economic development, digital governance, and combating transnational crime. This dialogue occurred between Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan and Australian Ambassador Angela Macdonald on May 14, 2026, at Government House in Bangkok.

Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn expressed gratitude to the Ambassador for her role in fostering closer ties, while the Australian side highlighted the enduring partnership between the two nations, focusing on military engagement, cultural exchanges, and strengthening interpersonal connections.

Central to their discussions was Thailand’s pursuit of membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with plans to complete this by 2028. Pakorn acknowledged Australia’s support through the Mekong-Australia Partnership framework, aimed at improving governance and technological standards.

The initiatives in applying digital technologies to enhance public administration were also commended by Australia, showcasing the importance of digital transformation in aligning Thailand with international standards. Pakorn, an alumnus of an Australian institution, praised the ongoing scholarship support provided by Australia.

The meeting also addressed the rising threat of transnational crime, particularly cybercrime and online fraud that poses significant challenges to both nations. Both parties agreed on the necessity to bolster intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination, and public awareness campaigns to more effectively address these issues. Additionally, Thai authorities highlighted the urgency of improving digital literacy among the populace to combat online fraud.

A review of the progress under the Joint Action Plan for the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership, applicable for the 2022-2025 timeline, was also conducted. Officials noted advancements in economic collaboration, regional security, education, and enriching people-to-people relations, asserting a mutual commitment to further cooperation in beneficial areas.

The meeting wrapped up with Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn extending best wishes to Ambassador Angela Macdonald as she nears the conclusion of her diplomatic service in Thailand this month. Both nations reiterated their shared dedication to sustaining robust collaboration and enhancing strategic ties in the future.
