In a historic shift for West Bengal’s political landscape, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Suvendu Adhikari is poised to be the state’s first BJP Chief Minister. This landmark event follows the BJP’s impressive triumph in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, where they captured 207 out of 294 seats, breaking the long-standing dominance of the Trinamool Congress.
On Friday, during a meeting led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP MLAs unanimously elected Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party. His candidacy received widespread support from senior party leaders and legislators, paving the way for him to form the new government in West Bengal. Amit Shah confirmed that every proposal at the meeting was geared towards endorsing Adhikari’s leadership.
Following this pivotal election, Adhikari, accompanied by key BJP figures such as Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee, and Tapas Roy, visited Lok Bhavan in Kolkata. He met with Governor R.N. Ravi, officially declaring his intent to govern the state. The Governor is anticipated to formally invite the BJP to establish the new administration, given their clear majority in the Assembly.
The swearing-in ceremony is slated for Saturday at Kolkata’s prominent Brigade Parade Ground, with numerous senior BJP leaders, Union ministers, and NDA chief ministers expected to attend. The presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also anticipated, marking the event as a critical political moment for West Bengal.
Adhikari’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s role signifies a major transformation in Bengal’s political milieu. Once a key member of the Trinamool Congress, he shifted to the BJP prior to the 2021 Assembly elections, becoming one of the state’s strongest opposition figures. His political standing surged notably after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency in 2021, solidifying his influence within the BJP.
The BJP's sweeping electoral success has ignited significant discussions across the nation. Analysts believe this outcome may alter the political landscape of eastern India and further bolster the BJP’s presence on a national level. The Trinamool Congress, which managed to secure only 80 seats, experienced one of its harshest electoral defeats in recent times after ruling the state for over a decade.
In anticipation of the oath-taking ceremony, security has been heightened across Kolkata, as thousands of BJP supporters are expected to converge at Brigade Parade Ground. This event symbolizes one of the most crucial political shifts in West Bengal’s recent history, with Suvendu Adhikari on the verge of officially leading the state’s first BJP government since gaining independence.
