On May 30, during his official visit to Singapore, Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam met with the Speaker of the Singapore Parliament, Seah Kian Peng, further solidifying the bonds of their nations. They explored various avenues for cooperation, reflecting the robust relationship that exists.
Speaker Seah Kian Peng extended a warm welcome to President To Lam, his wife, and their accompanying delegation. He acknowledged Vietnam's rising influence in both regional and international spheres, extending congratulations to To Lam for his re-election as General Secretary and his recent election as President. Seah also praised To Lam's impactful keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, which mirrored mutual regional aspirations and aligned strategic interests.
The conversation underscored the remarkable evolution of the Vietnam-Singapore connection, particularly since the elevation of their partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025. The leaders noted substantial advancements in political, economic, technological, and social exchanges, exemplifying the trust inherent in their relationship.
President To Lam reiterated the strong political confidence shared by both nations, saying that trade, investment, and connectivity are on the rise. He pointed out the 23 Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) as a hallmark of bilateral economic synergy and a model for collaborative regional development.
Discussion touched on cooperation in sectors poised to define future economies, with a focus on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, clean energy, carbon credit exchanges, innovation, financial centers, and supply chain resilience. These areas were identified as crucial for enhancing economic competitiveness and fortifying regional stability.
Moreover, President To Lam acknowledged the vital role played by the legislative branches in both countries in facilitating the execution of bilateral agreements and creating conducive legal frameworks for cooperation. He advocated for increased interactions among parliamentarians, notably young legislators and women lawmakers, aimed at fostering deeper understanding and sharing governance insights.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to bolster parliamentary collaboration and aid ASEAN's future trajectory. Speaker Seah Kian Peng expressed optimism that Vietnam would actively back Singapore’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, as both leaders reaffirmed their resolve to contribute toward a more united and resilient Southeast Asia.
