A significant accomplishment for the UAE’s manufacturing landscape was announced as Strata Syensqo Advanced Materials (SSAM) produced large-scale carbon fibre prepreg materials at its Al Ain facility. These materials are crucial for aircraft structures and various advanced sectors globally.
This announcement took place during the fifth edition of the Make it in the Emirates forum.
SSAM operates as a collaboration between Strata Manufacturing PJSC and Belgium's Syensqo. The company disclosed that the newly developed prepreg rolls would serve to create test components for Boeing’s 777X aircraft programme, following a long-term supply agreement with the aviation giant.
Sara Abdulla Al Memari, the Acting CEO of Strata, highlighted that advanced materials are central to the company’s industrial ambitions. She emphasized Strata’s ongoing expansion of production capabilities, aligning with the UAE’s National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology along with the Make it in the Emirates initiative.
Khaled Saif Al Nuaimi, Engineering and Maintenance Manager at Strata Syensqo, noted that the Al Ain facility is a unique hub in the Middle East. It is designed to produce various grades of prepreg materials tailored to meet customer needs and production specifications.
The production cycle consists of five essential stages, beginning with the creation of industrial resin under high pressure and temperature. This resin is then coated onto sheets of paper and preserved in low-temperature environments. The next step involves layering carbon fibres between resin-coated sheets under heat and pressure to generate the carbon fibre prepreg materials.
Once manufactured, the material is cut to specific dimensions requested by customers before being packaged and stored in cold conditions to preserve quality prior to shipment.
Al Nuaimi affirmed that all products undergo rigorous quality testing at SSAM's laboratories in Al Ain to ensure compliance with international standards. He also underscored the vital contribution of Emirati talent, with UAE professionals engaged in engineering, production, maintenance, and quality management.
These teams have received specialized training in Germany and the United Kingdom to facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge and bolster local expertise in advanced manufacturing.
The robust involvement of national companies in the Make it in the Emirates forum indicates the UAE's swift advancements in the realms of advanced materials and aerospace manufacturing. Experts in the industry claim these strides are pivotal in enhancing global supply chains while bolstering Abu Dhabi’s aspiration to become a competitive industrial center on a global scale.
