Starlink to Adjust Satellite Orbits in 2026 for Enhanced Space Safety

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

SpaceX’s Starlink plans to modify its satellite constellation by reducing the orbits of its satellites from the current altitude of 550 kilometers (342 miles) to 480 kilometers during 2026. Michael Nicolls, the Vice President of Starlink Engineering, revealed this initiative as part of the company's commitment to improving safety in the crowded orbits surrounding Earth.

This strategic alteration comes after a December incident in which one of Starlink’s satellites, operating at an altitude of 418 kilometers, faced an anomaly that resulted in a minor debris incident and communication loss. The satellite swiftly descended four kilometers, suggesting the likelihood of an onboard explosion—an unusual kinetic event for the satellite internet provider.

Nicolls clarified that lowering the orbital altitude would tighten Starlink's satellite trajectories, significantly boosting safety in space. Orbits under 500 kilometers currently comprise fewer debris objects and less congested constellations, thereby reducing the likelihood of collisions with other spacecraft.

With the number of satellites in Earth's orbit skyrocketing due to global internet service deployments, communications, and Earth observation missions, this shift places Starlink in a stronger position to manage the escalating traffic in space. SpaceX, which gained fame for its rocket launches, has now emerged as the leading satellite operator globally, with nearly 10,000 Starlink satellites providing broadband service to governments, businesses, and consumers.
