Stan Wawrinka Confirms 2026 as His Final Year on Tour

Swiss tennis legend Stan Wawrinka has officially declared that the 2026 season will mark his retirement from professional tennis. At 40 years old, Wawrinka, celebrated for his iconic one-handed backhand and three Grand Slam titles, made his mark during the high-profile rivalry era alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

One of Wawrinka’s career highlights came during the 2014 Australian Open, where he executed an unforgettable performance, overcoming Rafael Nadal in a thrilling final after a nail-biting five-set encounter with Djokovic in the semifinals. These pivotal matches solidified his legacy as a formidable player, capable of defeating the sport’s elite.

Wawrinka’s fans can anticipate his showdown with Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the opening round of the Australian Open, marking his 20th singles appearance at the tournament in Melbourne. Currently holding the 139th spot in the world rankings, Wawrinka earned a wildcard entry for the event.

In reflecting on his imminent retirement, Wawrinka shared that he contemplated this decision towards the end of last year, stating, “At the end of last year, between October and December, I had these thoughts. I wanted to continue playing, and I still do. It was clear to me that next year should be my last, and I feel at peace about it.”

Despite his age and a history of multiple knee surgeries, Wawrinka has shown resilience by competing at a high level. He played nearly 30 matches on the ATP Challenger Tour, taking breaks from the main tour when his ranking fell below 150.

This current season has started on a positive note for Wawrinka, as he helped usher Switzerland into the finals of the team-based United Cup, thanks in part to the impressive performance of teammate Belinda Bencic.

“I’m excited for this year,” Wawrinka commented. “One year in tennis is significant, but I’m committed to giving it my all and remaining competitive as long as my body permits.”

As Wawrinka embarks on his final season, fans can expect a mix of excitement and nostalgia, celebrating the incredible journey of one of tennis’s most enduring and skilled champions.
