Legal Proceedings Initiated Following Crane Collapse in Nakhon Ratchasima

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has initiated both criminal and civil litigation against Italian-Thai Development (ITD) after a fatal crane collapse at the high-speed rail project in Si Khiew, Nakhon Ratchasima. This incident occurred on January 14, 2026, when a crane fell onto an operational train, leading to several fatalities and numerous injuries.

In light of this distressing event, the government has acted promptly. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has assigned a fact-finding committee to examine safety protocols at the construction site and ascertain the accident's cause. The committee is to deliver its report within the next 15 days.

The SRT and ITD have committed to compensating the victims. Relatives of the deceased will receive 1.34 million THB each, and all medical expenses for injured passengers will be covered until they fully recover. Claims for property damage or lost belongings are also welcome for evaluation.

Acting SRT Governor Anan Phonimdang underscored the importance of compliance with safety regulations by both ITD and SRT across all active projects. Contractors must coordinate closely with station managers and pause work during train transit in construction zones to avert similar tragedies.

The affected train carriages have already been shifted off the tracks, and plans are in motion to remove the damaged crane. Rail line repairs are anticipated to span around seven days. To avert future mishaps, the SRT intends to incorporate sensors and install CCTV surveillance at construction sites for enhanced safety oversight.

From a legal perspective, the SRT has pursued criminal charges related to the fatalities and a civil suit for damages incurred, including injuries to public property and reputation. Further legal actions will hinge on the findings of the ongoing investigation.

This incident has ignited critical discussions surrounding construction safety codes, urging the call for more stringent enforcement and oversight in Thailand’s high-speed rail undertakings.
