Record Surge in South Korean Exports Driven by Semiconductor Demand

Post by : Shakul

In May 2026, South Korea achieved unprecedented export levels, boosted by soaring demands for semiconductors and technology related to artificial intelligence. New government statistics unveiled on Monday reflect a sharp uptick in international shipments, underscoring the nation’s vital position within the global tech supply chain.

The export figure demonstrated an impressive 53.2% increase year-on-year, totaling an astounding $87.8 billion. This represents the third straight month where South Korea's exports surpassed the $80 billion milestone, showcasing the robust global appetite for cutting-edge technological products and manufacturing inputs.

Leading this growth, the semiconductor industry saw a remarkable rise. Chip exports soared by 169.4% compared to the previous year, hitting a record monthly value of $37.2 billion. Experts attribute this surge to the ongoing AI revolution, which has significantly heightened the need for advanced memory chips and data center infrastructure.

Imports also escalated comprehensively, increasing by 20.8% to $60.8 billion. Consequently, South Korea recorded a trade surplus of $26.95 billion, underscoring its competitive edge in high-value tech exports and production.

Noteworthy growth was observed in exports to major partners, including a 59.1% rise in shipments to the United States, reaching $15.97 billion, driven by heightened demand for AI-related goods and electronic components. Shipments to ASEAN nations rose 58.4% to $15.85 billion, while exports to the European Union climbed 2.4% to $6.19 billion.

However, some sectors faced hurdles, with automobile exports dropping by 5.9% to $5.83 billion due to reduced working days, logistical challenges, and the lingering effects of U.S. tariffs impacting global trade flows.

Furthermore, exports to the Middle East fell by 7.7% to $1.27 billion, with car shipments particularly affected, plummeting by 27% during this period. Nonetheless, the impressive performance in semiconductors and tech products compensated for the downturns in other areas, enabling South Korea to celebrate one of its most formidable export achievements to date.
