Geno Smith Under Fire Following Raiders' Defeat to Browns

Post by : Mara Rahim

Geno Smith has garnered respect within the Raiders locker room since his arrival this season. Yet, during Sunday’s game against Cleveland, the mounting pressure became evident.

In the Raiders’ 24-10 defeat, Smith was sacked 10 times while facing loud boos from the audience before the game even kicked off. After the match, he was seen reacting towards the crowd and his postgame responses were notably brief, signaling his frustration.

The Raiders subsequently issued a statement addressing the incident. They expressed disappointment over Smith’s actions and confirmed they have spoken with him, emphasizing their dedication to their fans.

Given this season's disappointments, Smith's frustrations are understandable. When the Raiders traded for him, he and coach Pete Carroll hoped to replicate their previous success with the Seahawks in Las Vegas. Smith had spoken about having "unfinished business" coming into this season.

However, in 11 games, he leads the NFL with 13 interceptions. Assessing Smith’s performance is challenging, as the Raiders’ offensive line, managed by Carroll’s son Brennan, has failed to provide adequate protection. Throughout the game against the Browns, defenders were frequently penetrating the backfield, limiting Smith’s options. Carroll admitted that the team needs to work with the talent available.

In a swift move, Greg Olson has taken over as the new offensive coordinator after Chip Kelly’s dismissal. This marks Olson’s third stint in this role with the Raiders, and hopes are high that he can help Smith regain some form as the season progresses.

The quick firing of two coordinators — special teams coach Tom McMahon and now Kelly — reflects mounting internal pressure. Carroll, who has never dismissed a coordinator midseason, felt he had no alternative with a dismal 2-9 record. He voiced his obligation to provide fans and players with a solid effort, given the circumstances.

Despite the season's challenges, some players like defensive end Maxx Crosby continue to shine. Crosby put up five tackles for loss against Cleveland, bringing his season total to 19, a statistic that keeps him trending towards last year’s standout performance.

However, the offensive line remains problematic and demands significant improvement. Even with tackle Kolton Miller potentially returning, a comprehensive overhaul appears necessary come offseason. Allowing 10 sacks in one game underscores the severity of these issues, with pass protection and run blocking being persistent pain points.

On a brighter note, the Raiders are improving their position for next year’s draft, currently fifth in the projected lineup. Should the losing continue, there’s a potential to select a franchise quarterback, which the team desperately needs.

With instability hanging over the team, particularly after two coordinators have been let go, many staff members may find their futures uncertain, including Carroll. Anticipate significant changes once the season concludes.

Injury news has brought some relief. Running back Ashton Jeanty has avoided severe ankle damage and is unlikely to miss games, while Kolton Miller’s return remains a week-to-week condition.

As the Raiders push through the final segment of the season, they seek clarity. With eight different play-callers since 2021, achieving stability has proven elusive for Las Vegas. Time will reveal whether Smith can end the season strongly or if further alterations lie ahead.
