Tragic Death of Singaporean Tourist on Bhutan Trek

Post by : Shakul

A tragic incident unfolded as a Singaporean tourist lost her life while descending from the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan, a revered cultural site known for its stunning setting and spiritual significance. This distressing event took place during a guided tour, leaving both travelers and tourism officials profoundly shocked.

The 40-year-old woman was part of a group of 16 visitors on a Bhutan Smart Saver package booked through a travel agency in Singapore. They had flown to Bhutan on May 26 and were scheduled to explore various attractions across the scenic Himalayan region.

Tour representatives reported that the woman experienced some discomfort on the ascent. Even though she felt unwell beforehand, she persisted and successfully reached the monastery, which is perched over 3,000 meters high on a cliff.

However, her condition deteriorated during the return journey, prompting her to alert the guide. Immediate assistance was rendered on-site, with cardiopulmonary resuscitation being performed. A fellow tourist who was a physician also participated in attempts to stabilize her as urgent medical transport was arranged.

She was swiftly transported to Paro Hospital for medical care. Unfortunately, despite efforts by responders and medical staff, she could not be saved. Authorities have activated standard medical protocols, including a post-mortem examination, to ascertain the cause of death.

The incident has profoundly impacted those who were part of the tour. A senior official from the local travel agency expressed that this was one of the most harrowing experiences in his 26 years in the tourism field, emphasizing he had never witnessed a tragedy of this nature.

Condolences from Bhutanese authorities and members of the royal family have been extended to the victim’s family. The travel agency is actively collaborating with the woman’s relatives and companions, while liaising with pertinent bodies, including Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This incident underscores the physical demands of high-altitude trekking and the necessity of health precautions while visiting mountainous locales.
