A woman, aged 51, has been sentenced in Singapore after her theft of bottles of wine from a supermarket was detected with facial recognition technology. This case gained attention as the supermarket chain utilized an AI-enhanced security system to pinpoint the suspect following multiple theft incidents.
Identified as Catherine Tan Li Eng, she accepted guilt for a combined theft charge associated with several incidents that occurred in September 2025. Reports indicate she stole 19 bottles of Jacob's Creek wine from the Sheng Siong store in Block 622D, valued at roughly S$556.
The thefts were uncovered during a routine stock audit when staff noticed discrepancies on September 10. Review of surveillance footage revealed Tan placing wine bottles into a reusable bag and exiting the store without paying. Following this, the supermarket entered her image into its facial recognition system, implemented throughout their outlets in 2024.
This AI-driven technology was created to alert store managers upon the arrival of recognized individuals. Reports indicated that the alert was triggered the next day when Tan revisited the same supermarket. A retail manager confronted her near the self-checkout and discovered three more unpaid bottles of wine in her bags. Law enforcement was subsequently contacted, leading to her arrest.
In court, it was noted that Tan reimbursed the supermarket for the stolen items. Her attorney advocated for leniency, emphasizing her role as the caregiver for her elderly mother and intellectually disabled cousin, and her remorse for her actions. However, the court denied the request for a lighter sentence, with District Judge Brenda Chua mentioning the significant value of the stolen items and the patterns of repeated offenses, which warranted a more severe penalty.
This incident has ignited conversations surrounding the rise of artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies in retail security. Businesses in Singapore and beyond are increasingly integrating such advanced systems to thwart shoplifting and organized crime. While proponents argue these technologies enhance safety and lower losses, privacy advocates raise ethical concerns related to the use of facial recognition in public spaces.
