In a proud moment for India and the world, astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned safely to Earth after spending 18 days on the International Space Station (ISS). He was part of the Axiom Mission-4 (Ax-4) — a special space mission by private company Axiom Space in partnership with SpaceX.
Shubhanshu Shukla is the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS, making this a historic mission for India. The spacecraft, named Dragon ‘Grace’, landed safely in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California, on Tuesday, July 15, at 3:01 PM IST.
Long Journey Back to Earth
The team left the International Space Station on Monday evening around 4:50 PM IST. It took them about 22 and a half hours to return to Earth. After splashdown, small boats reached the spacecraft and safely brought the astronauts out. They were helped onto a ferry at sea around 4 PM IST.
Medical teams quickly did health checks to make sure the astronauts were safe and healthy. Later, helicopters will take them to land, where they will rest and slowly get used to Earth's gravity again. This process is called re-acclimatisation and usually takes a few days.
Who Was on the Axiom-4 Mission?
The Ax-4 team had four astronauts:
This was a special moment for the astronauts from Poland, Hungary, and India. It was the first time in many years that people from their countries went on a crewed space mission.
What Did They Do in Space?
During their time in space, the team conducted over 60 experiments. These included studies on:
They wanted to understand how space affects our health, food growth, and daily needs like water and air. These studies are helpful for planning future space missions, including long-term ones like going to the Moon or Mars.
Launch and Mission Timeline
The mission was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in the USA on June 25, 2025. It was the 18th crewed spaceflight by SpaceX since 2020. The spacecraft 'Grace' was operated by SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk.
The mission was led by Axiom Space, a private space company that also plans to build its own commercial space station. This new space station may replace the current ISS by 2030.
PM Modi Welcomes Shukla’s Return
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“I join the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returns to Earth from his historic mission to Space. As India’s first astronaut to have visited International Space Station, he has inspired a billion dreams through his dedication, courage and pioneering spirit. It marks another milestone towards our own Human Space Flight Mission — Gaganyaan.”
What This Means for India’s Gaganyaan Mission
India has big plans for its own human spaceflight program called Gaganyaan, which is expected to launch in 2027. The mission will send Indian astronauts to space on an Indian spacecraft, designed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Shubhanshu Shukla’s experience in space will be very useful for the Gaganyaan mission. His time aboard the ISS, doing real experiments and living in space, will help ISRO plan better training, equipment, and safety systems for future Indian astronauts.
A Big Moment for India and the World
This mission shows that India is ready to become a strong part of space exploration. Shubhanshu Shukla’s success proves that Indian astronauts can work on global space missions and lead in scientific research.
Just a few months ago, Indian-origin US astronaut Sunita Williams also returned from space after a nine-month stay on the ISS. Now, Shubhanshu Shukla has become a symbol of India’s next step in space.
What’s Next?
In the coming days, Shubhanshu and his team will rest, go through medical tests, and share details about their experiments. Their work will help scientists all over the world learn more about space and how humans can live and work there.
Axiom Space will also continue planning future missions. They are working on building a new private space station, where astronauts from many countries can live and do research.
Shubhanshu Shukla’s return from space is not just the end of one mission. It is the beginning of a new dream for India. A dream where Indian astronauts are part of global space teams. A dream where India has its own space station and space travel becomes more common.
This is a moment that inspires millions of students, scientists, and young dreamers across India.
