Tragedy struck in southern Turkey as a shooting in the Tarsus district of Mersin province left six individuals deceased and eight others wounded, as reported by local media citing Turkish officials. The violent incident transpired Monday evening.
Initial accounts suggest the suspected shooter first targeted his ex-wife before proceeding to a nearby restaurant where he fatally shot the owner and an employee, escalating the violence to other locales.
Three additional victims, including a shepherd and a truck driver, were later discovered dead near the sites of the shootings, according to reports from local media. Authorities have yet to reveal the identity of the alleged shooter or the motive for the violence.
Following the attacks, the assailant reportedly fled the scene, prompting Turkish law enforcement to initiate an extensive overnight operation, deploying helicopters and specialized teams to locate the suspect.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the incident as a “ghastly” act during a public address on Monday night, offering condolences to the victims' families and wishing a quick recovery to the injured.
Emergency responders transported several injured individuals to local hospitals while security personnel cordoned off sections of the area for investigation. Authorities are actively gathering evidence and interrogating witnesses connected to the incident.
This shocking event has sparked worries surrounding violent crime and public safety within the region, as police persist in their pursuit of the individual responsible for the attacks.
