Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra have approached the Bombay High Court to request the quashing of a Rs 60 crore cheating FIR lodged against them by Mumbai's Economic Offences Wing. They are also asking for protection from any police coercive measures during the consideration of their plea.
Judicial Proceedings and Upcoming Dates
The case was presented on Monday to a bench led by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekar and Justice Gautam Ankhad. The court has directed the couple to share copies of their petition with the complainant, Deepak Kothari, and has set November 20 for the next hearing.
Complaints and Allegations
Kothari alleges that from 2015 to 2023, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra convinced him to invest Rs 60 crore in their firm, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, only to reportedly misuse the funds for personal gain.
Defense by the Couple
In their defense, Shetty and Kundra claim that the FIR is based on misleading and inaccurate information with the intent to extort money. Shetty emphasized her limited involvement in the company’s daily operations and her brief association with it.
The couple further argued that their issue stems from a civil and contractual disagreement related to a business endeavor that failed, largely due to unforeseen events like the November 2016 demonetisation, which adversely impacted cash-intensive companies.
They are urging the Bombay High Court to annul the FIR and halt any police action until their case has been thoroughly evaluated, maintaining that the losses stemmed from legitimate business issues rather than any form of fraud or criminal plans.
