Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has once again found himself at the center of controversy after making strong comments on the ongoing dispute between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). His remarks have drawn attention not only because of their timing, just weeks before the T20 World Cup 2026, but also because he dragged India into an issue where many believe it did not belong.
The controversy began after the ICC decided to replace Bangladesh with Scotland in the T20 World Cup 2026. This decision came after Bangladesh refused to travel to India for their scheduled matches, citing security concerns. Bangladesh requested that their games be shifted to Sri Lanka, a co-host of the tournament, but the ICC did not accept this proposal. After weeks of discussions and a final deadline, the ICC moved forward with Scotland as a replacement.
Afridi reacted strongly on social media, questioning the ICC’s fairness. He compared Bangladesh’s situation with India’s earlier decision not to tour Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, a move that was accepted by the ICC due to security concerns. Afridi argued that the governing body showed different standards for different countries and claimed this was harmful to the spirit of cricket.
However, the ICC has firmly defended its decision. In a detailed statement, it said it held multiple meetings with the BCB over more than three weeks. The council stated that its security reviews found no real or proven threat to Bangladesh players or officials in India. Based on these findings, the ICC said it could not change the official match schedule.
Many critics feel Afridi’s comments added unnecessary fuel to the situation. They argue that the Bangladesh case involved clear deadlines, contracts, and tournament planning, unlike other situations. By bringing India into the discussion, Afridi shifted focus away from Bangladesh’s final refusal to play as scheduled.
This episode once again highlights how sensitive international cricket politics can be. While debates on fairness and safety are important, many believe that clear communication and respect for agreed rules are equally vital. As the T20 World Cup approaches, the focus now turns back to cricket, with Scotland preparing to take the place Bangladesh left behind.
