In the United Kingdom, a severe cold wave has led to the closure of numerous schools following the coldest night experienced this winter. An intense Arctic air mass has brought temperatures to well below freezing, with Marham in Norfolk registering -12.5°C. Residents are warned of anticipated snowfall and additional severe weather challenges in the upcoming days.
Amber weather warnings for snow are in effect across large areas of northern Scotland until Tuesday night, indicating a significant risk of travel disruptions, power outages, and threats to life and property. Concurrently, yellow warnings, suggesting potential disruptions, are applicable to much of the UK until late Tuesday morning.
Meteorologists predict that central and northern Scotland could experience widespread snow accumulation of 5–10cm, with certain regions potentially receiving as much as 15cm. The Scottish Highlands have also recorded chilling temperatures of -11.2°C overnight. Residents are advised to minimize travel and prepare for possible power interruptions.
As the cold spell lingers, it has created extensive school closures nationwide, with over 330 institutions closing in Wales and more than 170 in Northern Ireland on Tuesday. Authorities in Aberdeenshire, Orkney, and Shetland have confirmed ongoing school closures, while many schools in England, particularly in Norfolk and Devon, experienced closures or delayed openings.
Transportation services have also suffered extensive disruptions. Rail passengers dealt with delays due to deep snow affecting maintenance operations, with some international train services being temporarily curtailed. Further, several ferry routes along the west coast of Scotland faced interruptions, and road closures occurred in parts of Wales. Icy conditions at Liverpool John Lennon Airport led to flight suspensions, although operations resumed later.
The cold temperatures are expected to persist. Meteorologists warn that strong winds and heavy rain could pose additional hazards later this week as a powerful low-pressure system moves towards the UK. Areas in southern England, which have largely escaped snow thus far, may also see wintry precipitation at higher elevations by Thursday and Friday.
Health officials have issued amber alerts across England concerning cold weather, encouraging precautions, especially among the elderly and vulnerable populations. Furthermore, the cold snap has initiated cold weather payments for hundreds of postcode areas, offering financial support to households enduring extended freezing temperatures.
As the severe winter weather escalates, authorities advise the public to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel, and prioritize safety during this ongoing challenging weather.
