Severe Storm Set to Impact Alberta with Winds up to 100 km/h

Post by : Shweta

Alberta is on alert as Environment Canada has issued severe weather warnings and special statements in anticipation of a major spring storm later this week. Forecasts indicate that the storm may bring wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour, particularly affecting east-central and southeastern Alberta. Additionally, heavy rainfall, blowing dust, and possible snowfall in northern regions are expected. Residents are urged to prepare for potential travel difficulties and disruptions to services.

The storm system is predicted to originate over Alberta and migrate eastward toward Saskatchewan. Strong northwesterly winds are anticipated to begin early Thursday morning, with conditions continuing throughout the day before gradually easing in the evening. Some regions may experience sustained winds capable of damaging fences, roofs, branches, and unsecured outdoor items.

According to meteorologists, east-central and southeastern Alberta will likely endure the most intense wind conditions. Wind gusts in the range of 90 to 100 km/h could create perilous driving circumstances, mainly on highways and open rural roads. High-profile vehicles such as trucks and buses are particularly vulnerable to strong crosswinds, prompting officials to advise against unnecessary travel during the worst of the storm.

Moreover, some areas are expected to receive considerable rainfall in the upcoming days, with totals between 10 and 20 millimetres predicted for central and eastern Alberta. Northern regions might see wet snowfall accompanied by lower temperatures, and localized thunderstorms could occur, causing brief heavy rain and decreased visibility.

Blowing dust poses a secondary concern in drier areas, particularly open farming regions, where reduced visibility from dust and strong winds may lead to dangerous road conditions. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, garbage bins, construction materials, and any other items that may be susceptible to high winds.

The impending weather system is also anticipated to impact Saskatchewan, where officials have issued warnings for widespread severe winds and heavy rainfall. Some Saskatchewan areas may experience over 20 centimetres of snowfall coupled with wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h as the storm progresses eastward.

Environment Canada is closely monitoring this storm and advises that weather warnings may evolve as conditions change. Residents across Alberta should stay informed through official forecasts and emergency alerts on potential weather-related hazards.
