Rescue operations have ramped up after the discovery of three more bodies linked to the migrant boat tragedy near Pulau Pangkor. Malaysian officials reported that these individuals are likely undocumented Indonesian migrants whose vessel capsized en route to Malaysia. This recent find brings the total number of deceased to 30, with ongoing search efforts aimed at locating the rest of the missing passengers.
The Marine Police's Regional Operations Command, led by DSP Mazre Che Mahmod, confirmed that the bodies were located by the Royal Malaysian Navy’s KD Sri Indera Sakti approximately 20 nautical miles from where the boat originally sank. The bodies were recovered around 6 pm during the extensive search mission currently taking place near Pulau Pangkor and Lumut in Perak.
Investigations are underway to positively identify the new victims. Rescue officials have indicated that the deceased were likely part of a group of undocumented migrants traveling from Kisaran, Indonesia, to Malaysia. The vessel is reported to have departed from Indonesia on May 9 before capsizing on Monday in Malaysian waters.
This event has sent shockwaves through local communities, raising alarms over the perilous illegal migration routes between Indonesia and Malaysia. Officials estimate that 37 migrants were aboard the ill-fated boat at the time of the disaster, with 23 individuals successfully rescued since operations commenced on May 11.
The third day of the search and rescue operations began early Wednesday, bolstered by multiple Malaysian authorities. The response is being coordinated by the Marine Police, Royal Malaysian Navy, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, utilizing various vessels, patrol boats, and aerial resources in their extensive search for the remaining individuals.
Assets deployed include two Marine Police boats, three Royal Malaysian Navy ships, and three units from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, including KM Malawali, BENTENG 1203, and a Bombardier CL415MP aircraft from Subang Air Station. Authorities acknowledged that challenging sea conditions and the large search area have complicated rescue efforts, yet teams are determined to locate all missing individuals.
The Pulau Pangkor tragedy underscores the dangers faced by undocumented migrants on perilous sea voyages in search of better opportunities. Malaysian authorities are continuing their search efforts while investigating the circumstances that led to the ill-fated journey. Officials assure that they are dedicated to retrieving all missing victims and supporting those affected by this disaster.
