Pakistan’s aviation industry faced a major disruption as the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) suspended Serene Air’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC), effectively grounding all of the airline’s flights both domestically and internationally. This sudden move has left passengers and the aviation sector in uncertainty.
Reason for Suspension
The PCAA stated that Serene Air currently has no serviceable aircraft available for operations. “Serene Air presently has zero serviceable aircraft available for operations, rendering it incapable of sustaining the operational capacity required to conduct safe air operations,” the notice said. As a result, the airline was instructed to surrender its AOC immediately.
This is not the first time Pakistan’s aviation sector has faced operational challenges. Past issues, such as the collapse of Shaheen Air International in 2018 due to financial troubles, have highlighted the need for airlines to maintain a stable fleet and comply with regulatory standards.
Impact on Passengers
Passengers relying on Serene Air have been left stranded, both inside Pakistan and abroad. Reports indicate that travelers were affected in Saudi Arabia after one of Serene Air’s planes was grounded due to a bird strike. The airline requested special permission from the PCAA to repatriate these passengers safely.
Airline Response
In a public statement, Serene Air described the suspension as a temporary pause caused by “unforeseen circumstances.” The airline assured its customers that it is working closely with regulators to restore flights and emphasized that safety and service remain top priorities.
Effect on Pakistan’s Aviation Market
With Serene Air grounded, the domestic aviation market now mainly consists of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Airblue, and Fly Jinnah. These airlines continue to operate major domestic routes and selected international destinations. Experts believe that disruptions like these highlight the need for stricter regulatory compliance and better fleet management to maintain passenger trust and industry stability.
Future Prospects for Serene Air
The PCAA has indicated that Serene Air may regain its AOC if it restores its aircraft to operational status and formally requests license revival. Until then, travelers will need to turn to alternative carriers for both domestic and international flights.
