Selena Gomez Targeted by Online Criticism; Grimes Stands Up for Her

Post by : Saif Nasser

Selena Gomez, beloved singer and actress, has once again found herself at the center of online harassment. Following the release of her latest music video, Into The Dark, social media saw a wave of body-shaming and speculation regarding cosmetic surgery. In response, singer Grimes took a stand for Selena, condemning such cruel behavior and calling for an end to it.

The new single Into The Dark marks an important moment in Selena’s musical journey. The track is featured in the second season of Netflix’s hit series Nobody Wants This, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Although many fans celebrated Selena's return, a section of the internet chose to focus on her appearance rather than her artistry.

A viral post from a parody account on X (formerly Twitter) accused Selena of cosmetic surgery “gone wrong,” amassing over 61 million views, along with thousands of comments. Many users derided her looks, making disparaging remarks about her weight and comparing her recent photos to earlier ones, accusing her of using Botox or fillers.

It’s worth noting that several of these images were later revealed to be edited or captured from unflattering angles. Regardless, the tide of negative comments intensified, and the online vitriol persisted.

Grimes Defends Selena: “This Is Inexcusable”

Canadian artist Grimes, known for her previous partnership with Elon Musk, publicly defended Selena. She expressed her shock at the treatment Selena received after just two days online.

In a post on X, Grimes stated, “I watched the Into The Dark video and aside from some misrepresented close-ups, Selena looks extraordinary—one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.” She emphasized the urgent need to consider the mental health impacts of such negativity.

Highlighting the gravity of online bullying, Grimes remarked, “Consider how it feels to have millions criticize your face or body. Selena must be incredibly resilient to handle this daily. We cannot tolerate such immature bullying any longer. Accounts spreading body-shaming should face consequences.”

Grimes further underscored the influence Selena has on young girls, warning that such hate could instill insecurities about their own bodies. “Cruel comments may lead them to believe their worth is tied to their appearance. This is fundamentally wrong,” she asserted.

The Dark Reality of Social Media

This event underscores the darker aspects of social media, where celebrities are often subjected to intense scrutiny regarding their appearance, weight, and lifestyle. Selena has openly discussed her battles with body image and health issues, notably lupus, which can lead to fluctuations in weight and energy. She has repeatedly requested that people refrain from commenting on her looks, emphasizing the aspects beyond her control.

Despite this, many continue to fixate on her appearance rather than her artistic contributions. Experts warn that such behavior can severely impact an individual's mental well-being, resulting in anxiety and depression.

Support from Fans

While some online users disparaged her, many fans rallied to support Selena. They appreciated her courage and thanked Grimes for her advocacy. The singer's supporters filled social media with messages promoting kindness, highlighting Selena's long-standing focus on mental health awareness through her charitable efforts.

One supporter remarked, “Selena is one of the most genuine artists out there. It's time to cease the hate.” Another echoed Grimes’ sentiments, acknowledging the toxicity of persistent body-shaming.

A Call for Online Respect

While Selena has not addressed the recent trolling directly, she consistently champions self-love and positivity. In previous interviews, she stated, “Be kind to others. You never know what challenges they face.”

Grimes’ comments have ignited broader discussions regarding social media's responsibility in handling bullying. Many argue for stricter policies to curb the dissemination of misleading images and harmful comments.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder that even resilient celebrities are affected by online hatred. As Grimes poignantly stated, “It’s troubling and unjust. We need to aim for better.”

Amid these challenges, Selena remains dedicated to her music and acting career, inspiring millions globally. Her journey highlights the importance of respect, both online and offline.
