Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula have both advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open after knocking out tournament favorites Iga Swiatek and Amanda Anisimova, respectively.
The reigning Wimbledon champion, Swiatek, who was seeking to complete a career Grand Slam, was unexpectedly defeated in straight sets by Rybakina. The fifth seed triumphed with a score of 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday, putting an end to Swiatek’s pursuit of the solitary Grand Slam title missing from her impressive tally of six.
26-year-old Rybakina, who previously reached the finals in Melbourne in 2023, showcased her dominance with a powerful 11 aces and 26 winners, winning eight of the last nine games on Rod Laver Arena.
“Initially, emotions can run high in a major tournament,” Rybakina reflected. “Now, I’m purely focused on my game and improving daily. It’s just another match for me.”
Swiatek recognized that her serve was below par in the quarterfinal match. “My serve wasn't as strong as I'd hoped. I’ve been working on it, but sometimes old habits resurface,” she admitted. “I will continue making the necessary adjustments.”
In the contrasting quarterfinal, Jessica Pegula, who is yet to lose a set throughout the tournament, defeated Amanda Anisimova with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). The sixth seed is on a strong path toward her first major title.
“Reaching my first semifinal at the Australian Open is incredible,” Pegula expressed. “I've previously advanced further at the US Open, but this marks my first significant breakthrough here. I feel confident and enjoy the conditions.”
Anisimova struggled with 44 unforced errors, overshadowing Pegula’s 21, and her frustrations were evident as her hopes for a third consecutive major title evaporated.
The upcoming semifinal clash between Rybakina and Pegula is particularly intriguing, as their head-to-head record stands at 3-3 across six encounters.
In the other semifinal, two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka will take on Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, the 12th seed.
