Humpback Whales Achieve Unprecedented 15,000 KM Migration

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Recent research has identified two remarkable humpback whales that undertook extraordinary journeys across the oceans, traveling over 15,000 kilometers between Australia and Brazil.

These whales were recognized by their distinct tail markings, enabling researchers to correlate images captured in eastern Australia and Brazil over numerous years. Remarkably, the whales journeyed in opposite directions, establishing them as the longest-traveling humpback whales documented.

This groundbreaking study is detailed in the Royal Society Open Science journal.

The research team analyzed a vast collection of more than 19,000 photographs of whales gathered over four decades by both scientists and citizen researchers. Advanced software was employed to accurately identify whales based on their tail's color patterns and irregular shapes.

One whale eclipsed previous migration records by traveling over 15,000 kilometers, surpassing an earlier record set by a humpback migrating from Colombia to Zanzibar.

Typically, humpback whales are celebrated for their extensive migrations across oceans, following routes imbued in them by their mothers. They primarily consume krill and small fish during warm months, while migrating to tropical waters for breeding in the winter.

Notably, such cross-breeding migrations are rare among whales, making this discovery exceptionally significant.

Co-author Stephanie Stack from the Pacific Whale Foundation pointed out that this finding casts doubt on previously held notions regarding the separateness of whale populations across different oceans.

While researchers have yet to ascertain the precise paths taken by the whales, as they only acquired photographs at the beginning and end of their migrations, there is speculation that the whales mingled with other groups in communal feeding zones before proceeding to distinct breeding locations.

Phillip Clapham, a former head of NOAA’s whale research program, described this finding as a crucial illustration of the extensive migratory range of humpback whales.

The implications of this research extend to understanding potential shifts in whale migration patterns due to climate change, as rising ocean temperatures may influence both krill distribution and whale feeding and breeding sites.
