Red Wings Triumph Over Rangers with Raymond’s Late Goal

Post by : Mara Rahim

On Sunday night in New York, the Detroit Red Wings claimed a crucial 2-1 victory against the New York Rangers. The intense matchup remained competitive until the final minutes, with Lucas Raymond emerging as the hero for Detroit. His crucial goal, scored with under four minutes left in the game, provided the Red Wings with a needed victory, especially after their previous night ended with a lost three-goal lead against Buffalo.

Raymond showcased an impressive performance. After assisting three goals in Saturday's defeat, he contributed a goal and an assist, significantly impacting the match. His late-game goal marked a break from a seven-game losing streak against the Rangers, a long-awaited victory for Detroit.

The winning play unfolded when the Rangers struggled with puck possession near the neutral zone. Following a loss of control by Alexis Lafreniere, Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider seized the opportunity. He fed the puck to captain Dylan Larkin, who swiftly delivered it to Raymond as Detroit pressed into the offensive zone.

Raymond executed a remarkable solo effort, skating down the left flank, evading New York's Carson Soucy, circling behind the net, and faking a shot near the right circle. He created enough space to move to the center and lifted the puck over Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick, who was stretched across the crease.

Despite the loss, Quick emerged as a standout performer for the Rangers, registering 40 saves, including multiple stellar stops during Detroit's five power-play chances. He denied Dylan Larkin and Patrick Kane seven times each, and blocked six shots from Raymond before conceding the game-winning goal.

Quick's interventions kept the Rangers competitive throughout the match. Detroit pressed hard with chances, but Quick remained steadfast, notably making a sprawling save on Raymond close to the end of the third period. Without his efforts, the Rangers would have been at a considerable disadvantage much earlier in the game.

The scoreboard changed when Quick managed to stop the first 19 shots thrown his way. The breakthrough happened when New York rookie Noah Laba was penalized for hooking. Raymond's initial attempt from the right circle was saved, but as the puck trickled behind Quick, Alex DeBrincat quickly tapped it into the open net with ten and a half minutes left in the second period.

The Rangers quickly equalized with a power-play goal. With Moritz Seider serving a delay-of-game penalty, Artemi Panarin's shot from the slot deflected off Will Cuylle, who redirected it toward Mika Zibanejad. Zibanejad skated past Detroit rookie Marco Kasper and tipped the rebound into the right side of the net, leveling the score at 1-1 with just over eight minutes remaining in the second period.

Despite facing fewer shots than Quick, Detroit goaltender Cam Talbot, taking on his original team, made 18 saves and halted important attempts that could have shifted the game’s momentum. His composed performance in the closing minutes was crucial in preserving Detroit's slender one-goal edge following Raymond's late strike.

This victory marked a significant morale boost for the Red Wings after their recent setback, underscoring their resilience. With Raymond at the forefront, alongside solid contributions from Larkin, DeBrincat, Seider, and Talbot, Detroit secured a well-earned win.
