The Ministry of Municipality in Qatar, through its Livestock Department, has verified that the current inventory of local sheep, alongside planned imports, is adequate to fulfill the market needs during Eid Al-Adha.
Preparations for the festive occasion have been meticulously organized, featuring a robust operational strategy to guarantee a steady supply of Eid sacrifices. Continuous oversight of livestock numbers will be conducted in partnership with local breeders, accredited import firms, and regulated livestock markets to ensure an equilibrium in supply and demand.
Efforts to bolster local sheep farming were also highlighted by the Ministry. In collaboration with Widam Food Company and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, an initiative was launched to promote domestic sheep breeding and livestock production. This program allows breeders to market their sheep at competitive prices while receiving complimentary concentrated feed support.
Officials announced that sheep supply logistics for Widam Food Company will commence on Thursday, May 7. The Ministry is committed to providing both technical and material assistance for sheep breeding and fattening projects to enhance local production's role in addressing market demands.
Concerning imports, the Ministry continues to oversee import companies and licensing, broadening the list of approved sources based on the health status of exporting nations. Veterinary quarantine facilities are poised to manage incoming livestock shipments effectively.
The Ministry emphasized that all livestock, whether locally sourced or imported, are subjected to stringent health and safety protocols. Each imported sheep undergoes an extensive verification process, including monitoring disease conditions in the exporting nation, adherence to World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) guidelines, veterinary quarantine evaluations, lab testing upon arrival, and ongoing market inspections post-entry.
Eid sacrificial imports follow a regulated permit system featuring explicit health standards to guarantee a secure and stable supply in the marketplace.
Continued backing for local livestock producers is reinforced through complimentary veterinary services, subsidized animal feed, and organized marketing avenues.
Consumers are advised to procure Eid sacrificial animals solely from certified markets, ensuring that any animal purchased is healthy and shows no indications of illness, such as lethargy or unusual discharges. Additionally, the Ministry cautioned against slaughtering animals outside the authorized facilities to maintain public health standards.
