The State of Qatar has expressed enthusiasm over the recent conclusion of negotiations regarding a free trade agreement between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United Kingdom, deeming it a significant achievement in the relations between both regions.
HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, Qatar's Ambassador to the UK, stated to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) that this agreement transitions from mere negotiations to a sustainable institutional economic partnership.
This deal aligns with Qatar's vision of diversifying its international economic relations and solidifying its role as a trading, investment, and energy hub. It also bolsters Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to create a competitive and globally integrated economy.
The trade deal is set to establish a new cooperative framework that transcends traditional trading methods, enhancing collaboration in investment, energy, technology, and digital spheres, while also promoting sustainable development and private sector expansion.
According to the ambassador, the GCC-UK agreement is anticipated to unlock extensive opportunities for Qatar in critical sectors such as energy, finance, logistics, healthcare, and technology, facilitating easier access for Qatari businesses to the UK market.
He indicated that the agreement would expedite Qatar's economic diversification efforts while enhancing its digital and knowledge-driven economy, thus boosting global competitiveness for the private sector.
Signing this deal amid the current global and regional challenges conveys a firm message of mutual support for economic stability and long-term partnerships in securing global supply chains.
Qatar’s commitment to economic diplomacy remains steadfast, reinforcing its position as a reliable international partner dedicated to supporting stability and collaboration, while advancing energy security.
The forthcoming phase of collaboration is set to extend into emerging fields like AI, cybersecurity, clean energy, and digital innovation, aiming to cultivate partnerships focused on technology and expertise sharing.
The ambassador noted that the next steps would involve legal formalities and ratification of the agreement, followed by the establishment of technical committees for cooperation between governmental and private sectors, ensuring the transition of the agreement into actionable investment and business ventures.
The agreement is actively structured to diminish trade barriers, enhance investment and trade flows, and fortify cooperation in services and digital trade.
GCC nations have emerged as vital partners in the UK's trade strategy owing to their economic influence and significant role in global energy markets. Furthermore, Qatar maintains a robust strategic alliance with the UK across various sectors including politics, energy, and culture.
In summary, the ambassador remarked that the evolving relations between the Gulf and the UK reflect a trend toward deeper strategic economic integration, primarily fueled by advancements in finance, technology, and AI, thus aiding Qatar's ambition for a diversified knowledge-based economy.
