Priyanka Chopra Applauds Zohran Mamdani After Historic Mayoral Victory in New York

Post by : Mina Rahman

Actor Priyanka Chopra — who lives in New York City with her husband Nick Jonas and their daughter Malti Marie — used Instagram to mark a notable political milestone in the city. Zohran Mamdani has been elected New York City’s 111th mayor, becoming the youngest person and the first Muslim to assume the role at age 34.

In an Instagram Story, Chopra posted a screenshot of Mamdani addressing supporters after his win and offered her congratulations, noting the historic nature of the result and acknowledging the mayor’s family connections, including filmmaker Mira Nair.

Mamdani is the son of director Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani. Born in Kampala, Uganda, his family lived for a period in Cape Town, South Africa, before settling in New York. He attended The Bronx High School of Science and later graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in Africana Studies, and he served as a New York State Assemblyman prior to winning the mayoralty.

Chopra has been based in New York since 2016 when she began filming her American television debut, Quantico, which aired on ABC. Her relationship with singer-actor Nick Jonas progressed while she lived in the city; Jonas proposed in Crete in July 2018 and the couple later married in a multi-day ceremony at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace that blended Christian and Hindu rites.

Speaking in an earlier interview about her New York apartment, Chopra described the view as a personal sanctuary. She said the skyline and the Hudson River soothe and inspire her, and that watching the changing colours of the sunset from her living room has become a quiet daily ritual that fuels her creativity.

Mamdani’s election is widely seen as reflective of New York City’s demographic diversity and the rising influence of younger leaders in urban politics. Chopra’s public recognition of the event underlines how international celebrities sometimes engage with civic developments in the cities they call home.
