In 2025, China experienced its fourth straight year of population decline, decreasing by 3.39 million to a total of 1.4 billion, according to official statistics released on Monday. The nation is grappling with its lowest birth rate since 1949, registering just 5.63 births per 1,000 individuals, while the death rate surged to 8.04 per 1,000 — the steepest rise since 1968.
This decrease is compounded by mounting worries regarding an ageing populace and a sluggish economy. To combat this trend, the government has enacted multiple policies aimed at promoting higher birth rates, such as ending the one-child policy in 2016, allowing families to have up to three children by 2021, and providing financial support of 3,600 yuan ($500) per child under the age of three.
Moreover, certain provinces offer additional bonuses and enhanced maternity leave. Despite these measures, reversing the declining birth rate has proved elusive. Additionally, a contentious 13% tax on contraceptive products has raised concerns regarding its effects on family planning and public health initiatives.
China's fertility rate is alarmingly low, standing at about one child per woman, well below the critical replacement rate of 2.1. This pattern is similarly observed in other East Asian nations such as South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.
The financial burden of raising children in China discourages many young couples from starting families. Some couples prioritize personal freedom and choose to remain childless to avoid the intense pressures of parenting.
Experts project that the downward trend in population will persist, with UN forecasts indicating that China could see a reduction of over half its population by 2100. This demographic shift is expected to pose serious economic challenges, including a dwindling labor force, reduced consumer spending, and escalating pension costs.
An increasing number of elderly individuals are living alone or relying heavily on limited government assistance, and pension funds are nearing depletion. The country is urgently working to ensure adequate care for its growing ageing population.
