Pope Leo XIV Reflects at Muxima Shrine Tied to Slave Trade

Post by : Shakul

Pope Leo XIV made a poignant visit to the Sanctuary of Mama Muxima in Angola, a historic shrine linked deeply to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, sharing a message of healing and hope on his Africa tour.

This significant site, established by Portuguese colonizers in the late 16th century, served as a baptism location for enslaved Africans before their forced journey to Luanda, a point of departure for millions shipped to the Americas.

It is estimated that Angola was the source of over 5 million enslaved individuals throughout the trans-Atlantic trade, making it one of the largest historical departure points.

During his stay, the Pope prayed the Rosary within the church and addressed a large gathering of worshippers outside. He spoke of the “sorrow and great suffering” experienced by countless generations, calling for the creation of “a better, just world devoid of war, injustice, and poverty.”

This visit carries substantial symbolic weight, especially as the Vatican has begun to acknowledge the detrimental legacy of colonial ideologies. In 2023, the Holy See officially renounced the “Doctrine of Discovery,” which historically legitimized European colonial actions.

Experts say the Muxima shrine symbolizes both spirituality and historical pain. Religious historian Christopher J. Kellerman pointed out how papal decrees from the 15th century sanctioned the enslavement of non-Christians, leading to centuries of exploitation.

Adding a personal layer, genealogical research indicates Pope Leo XIV may have ancestors on both sides of the slavery issue in the United States, highlighting the complex ramifications of this historical chapter.

The Pope's visit is a key component of his 11-day apostolic journey across Africa, where his focus has been on themes of reconciliation, social justice, and reinforces faith in communities.

For African Catholics, this visit represents a time for introspection and healing—acknowledging the past while striving towards a more inclusive tomorrow.
