Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is back in the skies with direct flights to the UK as of Saturday, concluding a five-year hiatus linked to safety issues. This milestone signifies PIA's dedication to restoring its reputation and securing its place in the international aviation arena.
The UK imposed a ban on PIA flights in June 2020 following a catastrophic Airbus A320 accident in Karachi that resulted in nearly 100 fatalities. Causation linked to human error ignited bans from the UK, EU, and USA. In the interim, PIA dedicated itself to intense improvements in pilot training, aircraft maintenance, licensing, and overall safety procedures to adhere to global standards.
Restrictions were lifted by Britain in July 2025 after determining that PIA met satisfactory safety protocols as per international requirements. The airline now runs a route from Islamabad to Manchester twice a week, with ambitions to broaden its services to London and Birmingham.
At Islamabad International Airport, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recognized the resumption as a significant achievement for PIA, showcasing the airline's relentless efforts to navigate through numerous challenges.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) cleared the way for PIA in November 2024, reinstating its ability to operate flights to Paris earlier this year. This further illustrates the bolstering confidence in PIA’s enhanced safety and operational practices.
Established in 1955, Pakistan International Airlines once embodied national pride, but faced challenges including debt and regulatory hurdles, which tarnished its image. The government has expressed intentions to privatize the airline, although past negotiations have stalled over valuation disagreements.
The revival of PIA's flights to Britain not only restores critical global connectivity but also highlights the airline's firm commitment to safety, professionalism, and adherence to international aviation standards.
