PIA Faces Major Flight Disruptions Following SAEP Officials' Dismissal

Post by : Raina Nasser

KARACHI – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is currently experiencing extensive flight delays as tensions escalate following the dismissal of key officials from the Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SAEP). This ongoing conflict has now persisted for six days, impacting both domestic and global flight schedules.

As of Sunday night, the airline has cancelled nine flights and delayed 18 more due to technical issues coupled with a shortage of essential spare parts. Among the international flights affected are those traveling from Abu Dhabi to Peshawar, Dubai to Karachi, and Faisalabad to Dubai. Domestically, routes such as Gilgit to Islamabad and Skardu to Islamabad have also seen delays of up to ten hours.

The current crisis began when PIA terminated the SAEP president and secretary general after they failed to attend personal hearings scheduled for November 4 and 5. While PIA management justified the dismissals, labor groups have branded these actions as a clear instance of retaliation.

Air League, a labor union, alongside the Officers’ Association, has publicly supported the engineers, denouncing the dismissals and calling for their swift reinstatement. "Concerns regarding passenger safety should never be punished," stated Air League President Shamim Akmal. He emphasized that PIA is navigating a challenging landscape marked by corruption and financial instability, and ignoring safety concerns could heighten operational risks.

The SAEP controversy exacerbates PIA's existing operational challenges, with management accusing the engineering body of trying to sabotage the airline’s privatization efforts. Officials contend that the work stoppage aims to disrupt operations and exert pressure on the administration.

Labor advocates urge PIA to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the situation, stressing that passenger safety and operational smoothness must take precedence.

As PIA deals with flight delays and escalating tensions, passengers are encouraged to monitor flight schedules closely and stay informed about potential operational changes.
