The House of Representatives in the Philippines has initiated impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, confirming charges related to alleged unexplained wealth and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.. This landmark vote, which saw 257 members supporting the impeachment while only 25 opposed it, accentuates the rising tensions among the nation’s leadership and raises questions about Duterte’s political future as the 2028 presidential elections approach.
These impeachment complaints highlight dubious financial activities, the alleged misuse of confidential funds, and controversial rhetoric that purportedly threatened the president and his family. Duterte's legal representatives asserted her innocence and conveyed their readiness to confront these claims in the upcoming Senate trial.
Tensions reached a peak just prior to the impeachment vote when Senate President Vicente Sotto III was ousted by a majority of his peers, previously having committed to expediting Duterte's trial proceedings. This sudden change in Senate leadership has cast a shadow of unpredictability over how the Senate will handle the impeachment case.
Simultaneously, significant developments occurred in the Senate involving Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who surfaced unexpectedly after months of absence. Reports indicate that the National Bureau of Investigation sought to detain him following an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court relating to alleged crimes linked to anti-drug operations during former President Duterte's administration.
The ICC's indictment details alleged murders of at least 32 individuals from 2016 to 2018, a period during which dela Rosa was the national police chief. Former President Rodrigo Duterte faces similar judgments in the Netherlands, as investigations continue regarding police involvement in these contentious operations.
Sara Duterte has firmly dismissed allegations of corruption and misconduct, asserting that the impeachment is a politically driven attack. Her attorneys emphasize the need for the prosecution to substantiate all claims during the Senate hearings. Additionally, she accused President Marcos and his allies of attempting to undermine her politically, fueled by speculation about her presidential aspirations in 2028.
The impeachment complaints drew attention to remarks made by Duterte during a 2024 online news briefing, where she suggested that an assassin would threaten the president, his spouse, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she were attacked. She later clarified that her comments were fueled by personal safety concerns rather than a direct threat. Despite the controversies, polls indicate that Sara Duterte persists as one of the Philippines’ favored political figures. Analysts suggest that this impeachment struggle may amplify political rifts and significantly alter the political climate ahead of forthcoming national elections.
