Tankers Shift Course to Navigate Around Hormuz Strait

Post by : Shakul

In a strategic move, three major vessels, comprising two oil supertankers and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, have charted an alternative path along the coast of Oman to access the Strait of Hormuz. This shift marks a significant change in maritime navigation in response to rising regional tensions.

The ships, all operated by Oman Ship Management Company, were seen proceeding eastward while identifying themselves as Omani. Their navigation diverged from the frequently utilized northern route near Iranian territories, instead opting to stay closer to Oman’s southern shoreline.

This evolution comes in light of severe restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, attributed to ongoing geopolitical strife. Iran has permitted only limited passage through its waters, imposing rigorous surveillance and possible fees, which might reach as high as $2 million per voyage.

The newly chosen pathway for these vessels runs below the established international shipping lanes, steering clear of the typically narrower northern route. This is crucial for larger tankers which depend on deeper waterways and broader navigation corridors.

Each oil tanker is approximately loaded with 2 million barrels of crude oil, while tracking data suggests that the LNG carrier might be empty. They ceased broadcasting their position signals near the Mussandam Peninsula, leaving uncertainty about the completion of their journey.

This route alteration also underscores the growing challenges within maritime monitoring, as reports of signal jamming and spoofing have surfaced in the area. Such disturbances complicate the accurate tracking of vessel movements.

The ongoing situation is influencing global energy markets significantly since the Strait of Hormuz is a vital oil transit route. Any disruption or change in transportation patterns could have wide-ranging effects on oil supply chains and pricing on the international markets.
