In North Carolina, a grassroots effort is aiding Afghan refugee women in rebuilding their lives and community ties after significant cuts to federal funding for refugee services. Local faith organizations have begun a sewing circle program that fosters the acquisition of practical skills alongside social interaction and emotional support for resettled Afghan families.
Called "Stitching for Hope," the sewing initiative is spearheaded by two congregations in Durham that have united to provide continuity in support after local refugee assistance programs faced resource diminishment. This program offers transportation, childcare, sewing tools, and language help, creating a nurturing and accessible environment for Afghan women.
Participants primarily arrived in the U.S. post the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal. Organizers report that many women still encounter numerous challenges while assimilating into American society, attributed to language barriers, limited access to education, and struggles with obtaining driver’s licenses, which can severely limit job prospects and social integration.
Over seven weeks, the women crafted traditional garments, dresses, and scarves while fostering friendships within their new community. Volunteers with sewing expertise provided machine repair assistance and technical guidance to ensure that participants could pursue independent sewing endeavors even after the program ends.
Community leaders have highlighted that this initiative transcends mere sewing. Many Afghan women experience feelings of isolation in their new homeland, and these weekly gatherings have turned into a crucial forum for sharing experiences, enhancing self-esteem, and offering mutual support in navigating common obstacles.
This effort coincides with a troubling financial climate for refugee support services across the U.S. Nonetheless, local faith groups and volunteers remain committed, offering essential services like housing support, transport, education, healthcare guidance, and community assimilation initiatives.
Plans are already in motion to expand the sewing program later this year. Organizers are hopeful about increasing participation and are exploring avenues for participants to market their handmade creations, which could pave the way for establishing small business ventures that foster economic independence for Afghan women in their new lives.
