The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) has revealed the allocation of funds to four innovative multiple sclerosis (MS) research projects as part of the third round of its Research Grant Programme. Additionally, the fourth round of this initiative has been inaugurated to bolster MS research efforts across the UAE.
This latest funding cycle witnessed robust engagement from UAE researchers, yielding 36 letters of intent and 34 comprehensive applications. After meticulous evaluation, four projects emerged as recipients of this financial support, underscoring the increasing enthusiasm for MS-related research within the nation.
The overarching theme for this new grant cycle is “Advancing MS Innovation through Autoimmune Discovery,” which aims to enhance the comprehension of MS. Focus areas include immunobiology, genetic and environmental risk factors, novel therapeutic approaches, biomarker-based precision medicine, and enhanced clinical care for affected individuals.
Her Excellency Dr Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chair of the NMSS, remarked that the funded projects reflect the significant strides made within the UAE’s research ecosystem, particularly in the realms of artificial intelligence and precision medicine. She emphasized that local research endeavors play a pivotal role in enhancing treatment outcomes for those living with MS while also enriching global understandings.
Highlighted Research Projects
One prominent study, directed by Dr Bassem Yamout at Harley Street Medical Center, aims to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance MRI accuracy. This research intends to facilitate a clearer distinction between MS and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, ultimately reducing instances of misdiagnosis and promoting more timely treatment decisions.
Dr Omer Alkhnbashi at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences is spearheading another initiative that focuses on the development of an AI-driven predictive tool. This innovative application amalgamates clinical, imaging, and genetic information to optimize treatment options for MS patients in the UAE.
Over at New York University Abu Dhabi, Dr Youssef Idaghdour is overseeing the HEAL MS study, which investigates how lifestyle modifications—including diet, exercise, and stress management—can influence biological markers and enhance the quality of life for MS patients.
Additionally, Dr Nemat Ullah Khan from Khalifa University is researching a potential neuroprotective compound named Hi1a, which is sourced from the venom of the Australian funnel-web spider and is currently being tested via brain organoids to evaluate nerve protection and myelin repair capabilities.
Funding Overview and Upcoming Cycle
Since its inception in June 2023, the NMSS Research Grants Programme has disbursed nearly AED 11 million towards MS-related studies. These investigations span emerging treatments, understanding the disease, assessing prevalence in the UAE, and genetic exploration.
For the fourth round, researchers are invited to submit letters of intent between June 1 and July 5, 2026, followed by full proposals due by August 23, 2026. Final funding decisions will be made public in December 2026.
