In a remarkable feat, Nepal achieved a new milestone on Mount Everest as 274 climbers reached the summit in a single day from the Nepalese side. This marks the highest count of climbers ever to conquer the world's tallest peak in one day.
Nepal's hiking and tourism department officials confirmed that this new record eclipsed the previous one of 223 climbers, set in 2019. This surge in climbers coincided with a favorable weather period, allowing for a safer ascent.
Mount Everest, towering at 8,849 meters above sea level, serves as the boundary between Nepal and China's Tibet region. This year, climbers were restricted to the Nepali side as Chinese authorities did not issue permits for climbing from Tibet.
Images and footage from the mountain depicted long lines of climbers inching their way toward the summit ridge. Experts have consistently warned that packed conditions in Everest's 'death zone,' above 8,000 meters, can pose severe risks due to the critically low oxygen levels and rapidly changing weather.
Adventure specialists caution that congestion near the summit can lead to exhaustion, frostbite, oxygen deprivation, and delays that elevate the chances of fatalities. Concerns regarding the growing commercialization of Everest and its overcrowding during peak seasons have been voiced by many mountaineers and guides in the past.
In light of these safety issues, Nepal has implemented stricter regulations and increased permit costs in recent years to better manage crowds and enhance expedition safety. Authorities are also closely monitoring climber movements to mitigate risks at elevated altitudes.
Notwithstanding these concerns, Mount Everest continues to draw numerous international climbers annually, all hoping to achieve the dream of summiting the iconic peak. Officials anticipate that the summit count could further increase as several expedition groups have yet to inform base camp officials about their successful ascents.
This new summit record underscores the worldwide allure of Mount Everest and the growing challenges that Nepal encounters in balancing tourism, revenue, and climber safety on the world’s most recognized mountain.
