As the 2026 Cannes Film Festival approaches, independent studio Neon stands tall after achieving an incredible six consecutive Palme d’Or wins. Founded in 2017, this film distributor has made significant waves in the international film scene, showing resilience despite a leaner team than traditional Hollywood studios.
Tom Quinn, Neon’s co-founder and CEO, remarked on the ongoing surprise of this success. He conveyed that the studio does not enter Cannes with expectations for the Palme d’Or, recognizing it as one of the most coveting accolades in cinema, following the Academy Award for Best Picture. Instead, Neon prioritizes nurturing filmmakers and authentic storytelling over commercial formulas.
This year, Neon supports more than a quarter of the films vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or, with highly awaited projects from renowned directors like Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Na Hong-jin, and James Gray. Experts in the industry speculate that Neon is poised to bolster its impressive track record to seven consecutive victories.
Neon’s ascent is particularly notable amidst diminishing participation from major Hollywood studios in festivals like Cannes. Festival director Thierry Frémaux recently voiced his worries about this trend, while independent firms such as Neon and A24 rise to prominence through their commitment to original narratives and filmmaker-centric projects rather than relying solely on franchise-driven content.
The studio has held the reins for internationally recognized films such as Parasite, Anora, Anatomy of a Fall, and Titane, which not only clinched the Palme d’Or but also triumphed at the Academy Awards. “Parasite” made history as the first non-English film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, redefining the narrative for international cinema in the United States.
Quinn shared that Neon’s approach is rooted in empowering directors and encouraging creative ventures. Many selections are made based on confidence in talent rather than box office projections. Some projects were approached even before their scripts were finalized, while others were secured during the Cannes festival itself. This dedication to filmmakers has established Neon as a reputable name among global directors and cinema lovers.
Neon’s 2026 Cannes showcase features an assortment of international films from Japan, South Korea, Romania, among others. The burgeoning influence of the studio highlights the rising appetite for independent and global cinema worldwide. As the festival kicks off, the industry awaits to see if Neon will again assert its dominance and extend one of modern cinema’s most remarkable winning streaks.
