The National Testing Agency (NTA) has formally cancelled the NEET UG 2026 exam, originally conducted on May 3, following insights from various investigative reports and law enforcement agencies. This cancellation has significant implications for approximately 22.79 lakh candidates across the globe who registered for what is one of the largest medical entrance exams in India. A comprehensive investigation has been mandated by the government, with the matter being forwarded to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a thorough inquiry.
The NEET UG examinations took place in 551 cities throughout India and in 14 international locations at more than 5,400 testing centres. Official statistics highlight the test's participation numbers as among the largest globally. The NTA explained that the cancellation decision was made to uphold the credibility and trustworthiness of the national examination framework.
Following close examination of various investigative outcomes in collaboration with central authorities, the NTA revealed that the examination’s integrity might have been compromised, although specific details regarding the alleged irregularities remain undisclosed. The agency stressed that allowing the previous examination results to stand could have led to severe long-term repercussions for the trust in the examination system.
The announcement has generated significant anxiety among countless students and their families nationwide. Many candidates dedicated extensive time preparing for this highly competitive medical entrance test, crucial for securing places in undergraduate medical programs in India. The NTA is expected to soon release updated examination schedules and revised admit cards through official channels.
Previously, the NTA had assured strict security measures with over 6,000 observers deployed and more than two lakh personnel engaged to facilitate the exam smoothly. Despite these precautions, reported irregularities prompted a reevaluation of the examination's validity.
Experts in the education sector assert that this cancellation presents a considerable administrative challenge, requiring a re-examination for nearly 23 lakh candidates, fresh planning, enhanced security measures, and seamless coordination among various governmental bodies. Enhanced digital oversight and verification systems are anticipated to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
While acknowledging that the re-conduct of the exam may induce distress and logistical challenges for students and their families, the NTA affirmed that prioritizing fairness and maintaining public confidence in the examination process is paramount. Students are encouraged to remain updated with official NTA notifications regarding the new examination timeline, admit cards, and further guidance related to the re-examination.
