The Rajya Sabha elections slated for June 18 are gearing up to be a crucial political battleground, as parties navigate shifting alliances post recent state elections. These polls will play a pivotal role in shaping the Upper House's composition and could bolster the ruling National Democratic Alliance's influence in Parliament.
In a proactive move, the Bharatiya Janata Party has ramped up its electoral preparations, with senior leaders focusing on candidate selection and strategic planning. Insider reports reveal that Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting of the BJP's Central Election Committee to discuss crucial tactics for the forthcoming elections.
The NDA is optimistic about enhancing its representation in the Rajya Sabha, aiming to surpass the 150-seat threshold. Currently, they hold 148 seats and are projected to gain 17 to 18 of the 25 contested seats, inching closer to a two-thirds majority in the Upper House.
A key area of focus leading up to the elections is the concern over cross-voting in states with closely contested margins. Observers are especially attentive to Madhya Pradesh, where three Rajya Sabha seats are at stake. The Congress has enough support to secure one seat but is at risk due to a slim margin of votes.
Several influential political figures are nearing the end of their terms in the Rajya Sabha, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh. Their upcoming roles are expected to significantly affect party strategies moving forward.
In Karnataka, the Congress seems well-positioned to capture three seats based on its legislative strength, ensuring Kharge's probable return. Conversely, Rajasthan is shaping up to be a competitive arena, with the BJP likely to win two seats and the Congress one.
The Congress faces a challenging scenario in Gujarat, where it risks losing its only Rajya Sabha representative as Shaktisinh Gohil's term ends soon. With inadequate legislative backing to secure a seat, the party could find itself absent from the Upper House from Gujarat for the first time in many years.
The election process kicks off with the notification issuance, with June 8 marking the deadline for nominations. Besides regular vacancies, by-elections for three additional seats will also occur, making this election a critical test of political strength ahead of future electoral contests.
