During this year’s Hajj season, Saudi Arabia’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) worked very hard to make sure that pilgrims were safe from any bad weather. The NCM used more tools and more people to watch the weather closely in Mecca, Medina, and all the important holy sites.
To make weather forecasts more accurate, the NCM placed 16 automated weather stations across Mecca and the nearby holy areas. These stations can check the weather automatically. Also, the NCM set up two observatories with staff in Mina and Arafat to carefully watch the weather.
Because of this large setup, the NCM was able to send out 1,920 weather updates every hour, keeping everyone informed. A mobile weather center was also used. This center helped track weather in real time and added extra support to the team.
In Medina, the NCM added six automated weather stations and ran a manned observatory at Medina Airport to keep an eye on local weather.
To improve weather coverage even more, a special weather radar was installed in Medina. This radar worked together with three other radars located in Jeddah, Taif, and Yanbu. These tools helped collect weather data from more places and made forecasts much better and faster.
The NCM also opened a special media and communication center in Mina. This center helped share weather news and safety tips with the public. The messages were given in different languages, so pilgrims from all over the world could understand. The updates were created using artificial intelligence and modern imaging technology, which helped send weather information quickly and clearly to both pilgrims and emergency teams.
Thanks to these efforts, the NCM made the Hajj season safer by giving pilgrims better weather updates and helping protect them from sudden weather changes.
