In a significant escalation, Latvia’s military called on NATO fighter jets after two drones, originating from Russian territory, crashed near an oil storage site in Rezekne, close to the border with Russia.
Officials in Latvia reported that the incident resulted in damage to four empty oil storage tanks, situated approximately 40 kilometers from Russian soil. Authorities later recovered what is believed to be debris from the drones at the crash location.
Latvian Defence Minister Andris Spruds indicated during an interview with national broadcaster LSM that the drones were probably launched by Ukraine and had intended to strike within Russia before veering into Latvian airspace.
In response to the occurrence, NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission deployed military aircraft to the vicinity to oversee developments and assist in security protocols.
This drone episode unfolds amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, Russia issued a warning concerning potential strikes on foreign embassies in Kyiv if Ukrainian forces try to disrupt Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations on May 8 and 9.
Earlier statements from the Russian military highlighted intentions for significant assaults on Kyiv unless Ukraine adheres to Moscow's declared ceasefire during the Victory Day festivities, which include the annual military parade in Red Square.
In a response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked that Russia’s relentless aggression demonstrates a clear disregard for the peace initiatives put forth by Kyiv.
