A comprehensive report released by the government has unveiled alarming economic disparities in Nagaland, spotlighting broad income inequality and social inequity in the northeastern region. Titled “Income Disparity in Nagaland,” the report indicates that the lowest 50 percent of households capture only about 18 percent of the state’s total income, while the wealthiest 5 percent commands nearly 21 percent of the overall income pie. This growing divide between the affluent and the economically disadvantaged raises crucial concerns.
The report was made public in Kohima by Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen on May 7, 2026, as officials emphasized the importance of understanding income distribution trends within the various societal segments of Nagaland. Policymakers are expected to utilize these insights in crafting future economic initiatives and welfare programs aimed at bridging the income gap.
Notably, the top 5 percent of households enjoy an average monthly income of ₹71,028, in stark contrast to the bottom 50 percent, which survives on an average of merely ₹1,639 per month. Such disparities have drawn attention from economists and social scholars who argue that limited job opportunities and inequitable access to essential resources aggravate this widening chasm in household incomes.
The Gini coefficient for Nagaland stands at 0.46, a metric widely utilized to gauge income inequality. A score approaching 0.46 reflects significant economic disparities, highlighting uneven growth and wealth distribution across households.
Economic analysts stress that the report underscores pressing challenges faced by many families, particularly those in rural regions and economically weaker segments of society. Factors such as restricted employment options, reliance on agriculture, insufficient industrial growth, and unequal development across districts are contributing to adverse income distribution outcomes. Access to quality education and reliable healthcare remains limited for low-income households.
The unveiling of this report has sparked critical dialogue surrounding economic frameworks and inclusive advancements within the state. In forthcoming years, officials are anticipated to place a stronger emphasis on poverty alleviation, job creation, support for entrepreneurship, and rural development. Enhancing social welfare programs and bolstering access to economic opportunities for marginalized communities may also become priority areas.
Experts assert that tackling income inequality will necessitate sustained policy efforts and equitable economic progression throughout all of Nagaland. The insights from this report have brought to light the urgent call for holistic development strategies, aiming to improve income distribution and minimize financial inequalities among households. These findings are poised to shape forthcoming economic dialogues and policy-making efforts at the state level.
