Morocco has reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a tense and dramatic semi-final against Nigeria. The match, played on Wednesday in Rabat, ended 0–0 after 120 minutes, leaving the outcome to be decided by a penalty shootout. Morocco held their nerve and won 4–2 to secure a place in the final.
During the match, both teams had chances, but strong defending and excellent goalkeeping kept the score level. Morocco, playing at home, controlled much of the possession and created more scoring opportunities. Nigeria also pressed forward at times, but could not convert their chances into goals.
In the penalty shootout, Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou became the hero by saving two of Nigeria’s shots. His stops gave Morocco a crucial advantage. Moroccan players Achraf Hakimi, Neil El Aynaoui, and Eliesse Ben Seghir successfully converted their penalties. The decisive kick was scored by Youssef En-Nesyri, sending the home crowd into celebration.
This victory marks a historic moment for Morocco, reaching the AFCON final for the first time since 2004. The team has not won the tournament in 50 years, with their only title coming in 1976. Playing in front of their home fans adds excitement and hope for the team and supporters.
Nigeria fought hard but struggled to break through Morocco’s strong defence. Despite the defeat, Nigeria will compete for third place against Egypt, who were beaten by Senegal in the other semi-final.
Morocco will face Senegal in the final on Sunday. Senegal won their semi-final 1–0 against Egypt, and the upcoming final promises to be a thrilling contest as both teams aim to lift the AFCON trophy. Senegal won the tournament in 2021, while Morocco seeks their first-ever AFCON title.
The Moroccan win highlights skill, patience, and composure under pressure. Players and fans celebrated the hard-earned victory, showing how much it means to the nation. Both teams displayed determination and respect throughout the match, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
