In a key development aimed at addressing global water challenges, the UAE has enriched the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award by including artificial intelligence (AI) as a principal criterion for evaluation. This enhancement is intended to foster the adoption of smart technologies and inspire innovative concepts that mitigate the urgent water scarcity crisis faced worldwide.
Chairing the governing foundation, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer emphasized the necessity of fostering creativity and innovation through advanced AI tools. This strategic shift aligns with the UAE’s overarching goal of empowering innovative thinkers and transforming forward-looking visions into actionable projects that enhance the accessibility of clean and safe water globally.
With a total prize pool of USD 1 million, the award will now prioritize solutions driven by AI that refine water management techniques, boost efficiency, and lower operational costs. Evaluators will carefully assess the application of AI and machine learning in automating processes, forecasting demand, proactively monitoring water quality, and improving renewable energy storage associated with water desalination and purification.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award is structured into four key categories: Innovative Projects (both large and small), Innovative Research and Development (for national and international institutions), Innovative Individuals (noteworthy researchers and youth), and Innovative Crisis Solutions. Each category possesses its own criteria, valuing creativity and innovation significantly, now furthered by the inclusion of AI.
This emphasis on AI is aimed at advancing novel approaches and implementations in areas such as solar-powered desalination, the utilization of wind and biomass energy, and cutting-edge filtration technologies. The objective is clear—fostering sustainable water solutions that adapt to varying environments and efficiently meet escalating global needs.
By revising the award’s evaluation criteria, the UAE sends a compelling message about the future of water innovation. Supporting AI-driven concepts not only propels technological advancement but also facilitates the emergence of practical, scalable projects that can revitalize communities and safeguard essential water resources for generations ahead.
