During the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday. This discussion, which occurred on the summit's sidelines, aimed to bolster cooperation between their two nations.
Key Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Secretary of Economic Relations Sudhakar Dalela, were present, reviewing the current bilateral relationship and identifying new avenues for collaboration, particularly in security, cultural exchanges, and economic partnerships.
President Ramaphosa graciously welcomed PM Modi upon his arrival for the G20 Summit at the Nasrec venue, reflecting the robust relationship between India and South Africa.
On the summit’s opening day, PM Modi participated in two sessions, emphasizing the significance of global collaboration, disaster resilience, and sustainable growth. He urged a collective effort to tackle significant global challenges and foster an equitable and inclusive future.
Through his social media platforms, PM Modi expressed that the second summit session revolved around fortifying global resilience against climate change, advocating for equitable energy transitions, and enhancing global food systems. He underscored India’s dedication to these objectives via a human-centric developmental approach.
He elaborated on India's creation of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group during its G20 Presidency, asserting that global challenges require global solutions. Modi called for a shift in disaster management from response to a development-centric model, highlighting the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure as a testament to this goal.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister proposed a G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership aimed at ensuring G20 space agencies' satellite data is readily available to developing nations, particularly in the Global South. This initiative would enhance agricultural practices, fisheries, environmental planning, and disaster preparedness.
Reiterating India’s commitment to clean energy, PM Modi introduced the G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative designed to foster recycling, urban mining, and innovations in second-life batteries, ensuring secure global mineral supply chains and supporting sustainable development.
The dialogue between PM Modi and President Ramaphosa is poised to facilitate cooperation in emerging sectors, strengthen strategic relationships, and unveil new opportunities for collaboration between India and South Africa.
