Minor Earthquake Swarm Jolts San Francisco Bay Area, No Damage Reported

Post by : Raina Nasser

Early on Sunday morning, residents of the San Francisco Bay Area experienced a surprising jolt as several small earthquakes occurred in the region, underscoring its seismic vulnerabilities. Fortunately, authorities reported no injuries or damage to structures.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a minimum of eight quakes between 9:38 am and 9:41 am local time, primarily near San Ramon, located around 25–30 miles east of San Francisco. The largest quake reached a magnitude of 3.8, while others fluctuated between 2.5 and 3.7.

People in San Ramon, Dublin, and Emeryville felt quick, rolling vibrations, but emergency services verified that there were no injuries or damage to property.

Typically, earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2.5 can be felt by nearby individuals, though they rarely inflict structural damage. The Bay Area is situated along the Calaveras and Hayward fault lines, renowned for frequent minor earthquakes. This swarm follows an increase in seismic activity observed in September and October, which included minor tremors affecting Berkeley and nearby regions.

Experts emphasize that even minor tremors are a crucial reminder to remain prepared for earthquakes in this active area. Authorities are actively monitoring seismic occurrences and encourage residents to stay updated and adhere to safety protocols in the event of future significant quakes.
