China has decided not to dispatch its defence minister to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore for the second consecutive year. Instead, the country will be represented by military experts and scholars, continuing its trend at this critical security summit.
The annual Shangri-La Dialogue, commencing this week, is recognized as a pivotal forum for defence and security discussions across the Asia-Pacific. It brings together defence ministers, military officials, and security experts worldwide to address pressing issues of regional stability and global security.
Defence Minister Dong Jun will not attend, as announced by China’s Ministry of National Defence. The delegation will be led by Major General Meng Xiangqing from the National Defence University, highlighting China's strategic representation.
Spokesman Jiang Bin stated that the delegation comprises experts from the National Defence University, the Academy of Military Sciences, and the Chinese Navy. They will articulate China’s security policies and initiatives for regional cooperation during the conference.
Jiang emphasized China’s ongoing commitment to defence cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, aiming to enhance dialogue between nations. The delegation's focus will be on fostering mutual trust, minimizing misunderstandings, and reinforcing collaboration among regional partners.
The absence of Dong Jun has drawn significant attention, particularly following earlier reports suggesting he was under investigation for corruption, which Chinese officials have labeled as unfounded.
This year’s summit will likely feature critical discussions on regional tensions, military alliances, maritime security, and other geopolitical controversies. The presence of U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is also notable among the high-ranking officials at the event.
Historically, the Shangri-La Dialogue has provided a unique venue for military leaders from competing nations to engage directly. Analysts contend that China’s choice to forgo sending its defence minister may hinder high-level defence diplomacy at this critical forum.
In addition to the Shangri-La Dialogue, China also organizes its international security event, the Xiangshan Forum, which serves as an alternative for presenting its own security perspectives and strengthening military ties with global partners.
